I guess, you had to completely re-design the whole engine, Shelby. What modification did you make beside the crankshaft? (Modded cylinder head, bigger valves, racing camshaft maybe?) If you increasing power with achieving bigger rev, than this engine has to rotate at least 'bout 9000-10000/min. Am I right?
But I'd like to build an engine for road use, and I want it to be reliable. Spending 600 euros (only for the cylinder+piston kit) and this amount once more on the others, and getting a useless engine which blows up
on the roadside is not so funny.
So for first I just get as much information as I can.
Polish is a nice language, unfortunately I don't understand it, but the point is clear. They made a 800 cc engine with the cylinders of the 1600 cc VW Beetle. It's a definetely redneck solution
, but I saw their engine working on the meeting in Slovakia. The guy said that he had problems with overheating. Without oil cooler the oil temperature never went under 130-140 C°
price), and building a test engine. I don't know if it worths it...

It's a polish site 'bout tuning the 126 engine.

Shelby a écrit:yes 55-60 cv, cylinders in aluminium, forged piston, cammes Colombo&Bariani, entry valves in titanium, valve retainer in titanuim, push rod titanium, conrods Pankl in titanium, head with two separate ducts, Dellorto carburettor from 45 mm and very much other![]()
And how did you get this parts? Did you buy them at a specialized company, or did you design 'em?
It seems to contain so much information, but we don't understand it. It's like having a bottle of the finest wine, and having no opener.
I'll try to contact these polish guys, and get some furher information.

This solution needs a lot of work on the crank case, the pistons, the cylinders and on the con rod.
Does the italian 800cc piston liner kit require any modification on the crank case? (I mean, strenghtening, drilling, welding, or anything?)
I'd rather prefer the italian stuff, but I'm thinking about buyng some beetle cylinders (they have a LOLprice), and building a test engine. I don't know if it worths it...

Porco Rosso a écrit:Yep Pete ! Putting VW cylinders and pistons is not so easy. You will have to drill, weld and made others operations. But like you say, VW kit is cheap than Italian kit. But Italian kit doesn't need mecanical operation. Every parts go right on the crankcase. It would be interesting to make comparative between the cost of an engine with a kit VW makes "house", and an engine with an Italian kit. With the VW kit you have much more freedom and pleasure to make your engine like you want.

Porco Rosso a écrit: Will also know that Italian NARDI in the Sixties had already built somes engines with VW kit. They were artisanal, and they worked very ggod. In a few days, I will put online a complete file concerning the work of Mr. NARDI...
